Like most plant fungi this one thrives in the cool moist environment of the fall and spring and attacks the most vulnerable new growth that gives the shrub its name red tipped photinia and the disease spreads from there. Photinia shrubs sometimes contract a disease called photinia leaf spot or photinia black spot. Red tipped photinia and disease symptoms. The main culprit among photinia bush diseases is entomosporium mespili the fungus that causes photinia leaf spot.

This fungus entomosporium mespili causes leaf spot on all members of the rose family including red tip photinias. Little spots similar to tar spots appear on leaves. Photinia leaf spot disease is caused by a fungal pathogen. It also defoliates indian hawthorn loquat flowering and fruiting pear hawthorn and firethorn.

Leaves are dotted with black spots that slowly spread until leaves wilt and fall off. This disease is rarely deadly although it does lessen the beauty of your photinia. Cover all plant surfaces including the undersides of leaves. Leaf spot is one such red tip disease as is fire blight powdery mildew and various scab and fungal diseases.
