In poorly drained areas azaleas should be placed in raised beds. Coastal azalea leaves are medium green to powdery blue green. Regular azaleas are often deciduous and will lose their leaves every year in the cold season even in mild winters. Additionally azaleas of the deciduous type have larger longer leaves whereas japanese azaleas have smaller leaves that are at most 2 inches 5 to 6 cm long.

In severe winters they usually lose all their foliage but with some varieties depending on temperatures it remains until spring and is only then replaced by the new leaf shoot. Azalea gall this azalea disease commonly occurs in early spring on new leaf growth. All parts of coastal azalea are highly poisonous so don t grow this shrub where young children have easy access.
