Leadplant leaves!!!

Pinnately compound leaves are covered with short dense hairs giving the plant a grayish appearance. They need to smell when a predator is coming and plants such as monarda will mask that scent. Leadplant is a small deciduous shrub 1 3 ft. Common name of lead plant refers to the once held belief that the plant was an indicator of the presence of lead in the ground.

The leadplant is listed in seed mixes we have purchased but we have not yet found any in our prairie patches. Fruticosa is a large bushy shrub lacking hair to 6 or even 10 feet tall. The deep taproot makes it extremely drought tolerant and able to thrive in any well drained soil. The genus amorpha is often called false indigo because of its resemblance to plants of the genus indigofera.

Its leaflets are up to 2 inches long and 1 inch wide. Leadplant amorpha canescens exhibits a unique display of both foliage and flowers. Leaves are odd pinnately compound and covered in dense lead colored silver gray hairs giving the plant its common name. Tall with tiny purple flowers grouped together in colorful terminal spikes.
