Yews are notorious for quickly yellowing and dying in wet or water logged soil. These small evergreen trees are good for rock gardens foundation planting or as a small shrub. These plants are tolerant of many conditions from drought and shade to sun and moist soil. They are classified as conifers.

They are highly adaptable and make a nice addition to a garden border path or in a mass planting. Soil ph dieback has been associated with yews growing in very acid soils ph 4 7 5 4 or very alkaline soils ph over 7 5. These are easy to care for drought resistant evergreen shrubs. It is even believed that the ancient and mythical yggdrasil tree of norse mythology was a yew tree.

Yew shrubs have been around for ages and are extremely long lived plants. There is no visible bloom but it has lovely fern like foliage. This type of small evergreen ornamental plant grows best in usda planting zones 3 7 and enjoys partial shade. Commonly referred to as southern spreading yew this plant is somewhat slow growing and is rarely bothered by insects and disease.
