Grows 23 feet tall and wide and spreads freely to make broad colonies. Mahonia aquifolium is a popular subject in shady or woodland plantings. The spiny leaves make a fine barrier plant or specimen. Dramatic frond like leaves grow in whorls along coarsely branched upright stems.

This statuesque carefree shrub is a stellar plant for the winter garden. One source says the berries contain berberine which might be harmful in some situations. The tart compounds that usually make unripe fruits bitter and acidic break down as fruit cells start to ice over. Mature leaves matte medium green.

This shrub s ability to tolerate many sites and the fact that birds eat the berries has allowed leatherleaf mahonia to naturalize in parts of the united states. I m not a doctor but several websites mention that mahonia berries are edible when fully ripe and soft. Its berries attract birds. It is resistant to summer drought tolerates poor soils and does not create excessive leaf litter.
